Chapter 20

Marissa had stopped beside the river to think about her decision to see Night Wolf.

It was a brisk, windy day, and she watched the fallen yellow aspen leaves float by in the river, their edges curled and looking like miniature canoes. Tiny minnows darted around beneath the surface of the water, taking advantage of the sun. She felt the coolness of the day and wished that she had brought a shawl to wrap around her shoulders.

But most of all, she felt torn again.

She looked toward her home. She wondered if she should return there and talk all this over with her father. Then she gazed in the direction of the Cree village. She was filled with such longing. She wanted to know her mother, but she needed a man for the first time in her life.

If she went to the village, wouldn't it make her ache for Night Wolf even worse?

Yet, the only way she would ever be able to search out the truth of her real mother would be to go there.

She had to remember Night Wolf's promise to Blue Star. But if he loved Blue Star, why had he kissed Marissa?

"Oh, this is so hard," she whispered as she raked her fingers through her long black tresses.

She knew that she must return home. She must talk with her father and make him understand her desire to know her true mother. She wanted his permission, his blessing, to go to the Cree village. She would promise him that she would not see or speak with Night Wolf. Her visit would have only one purpose. To find her mother.

Sighing, she mounted her horse and wheeled it back around in the direction of her home. She rode slowly alongside the river, but stopped when she saw movement. She leaned to her right, her eyes slowly searching the dark shadows of the aspens.

Then she saw it.

A beautiful palomino pony was moving slowly through the forest. Its saddle was empty. Whoever had been riding this lovely pony must have been thrown. The rider might be lying somewhere close by, injured.

Dismounting quickly, Marissa walked toward the pony to take its reins. But her approach alarmed it and it broke into a hard gallop and disappeared into the shadows of the forest.

Marissa went back to her own horse, took its reins, then walked slowly along the edges of the forest. Her eyes looked guardedly into the deep shadows, then up ahead, then behind her. She suddenly felt in danger herself.

It was best to hurry on to the protection of her home. She would tell her father about the pony, and its missing rider. He would know what to do. He would go to the fort and tell the officer there and the colonel could send out soldiers to scout the area.

Just as she started to mount, she heard someone sobbing. She couldn't go home without finding the person. She could not abandon whoever it was. She would not be a coward and leave.

Her shoulders
